General SWPPP Questions

A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is a document that outlines how a construction site will manage stormwater runoff to prevent pollution. It is required by federal, state, and local agencies for projects that disturb one acre or more of land.

The project owner, developer, and general contractor are responsible for ensuring all SWPPP measures are in place and followed. Non-compliance can result in fines, work stoppages, and legal penalties.

A SWPPP must be developed before construction begins and remain active throughout the project until final stabilization is achieved.

BMP Installation & Maintenance

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are erosion and sediment control measures (e.g., silt fences, inlet protection, stabilized construction entrances) that help prevent sediment runoff and protect water quality.

BMPs should be inspected and maintained regularly, especially after heavy rainfall or site changes. Neglected BMPs can lead to stormwater violations and costly fines.

Dewatering & Stormwater Discharge

Dewatering activities must comply with stormwater discharge permits and may require filtration or sediment controls before water is released. Discharging sediment-laden water into storm drains or waterways is illegal and can result in fines.

Only if the water meets local discharge regulations. You may need to use filtration bags, sediment basins, or chemical treatments before releasing water into a storm drain.
